The Truth About Silicone vs. TPR Materials

We get this question a lot at Messimaze, and it’s the most important one: "What are these toys actually made of, and are they safe?"

When you open a new squishy toy, sometimes there's a slight scent, or it feels incredibly sticky. It’s natural to wonder if that means toxic chemicals. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on the science of "squish" to put your mind at ease.

The Two Main Players: Silicone and TPR

Almost all high-quality stress relief toys on the market today are made from one of two materials. Both are safe when sourced responsibly, but they offer different sensations. Our new Bubblegum Slime is a great example of a unique texture!

1. TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber)

Think of TPR as a mix between plastic and rubber. It's incredibly durable, stretchy, and has a good "bounce" to it. It's widely used in everything from toothbrush grips to baby toys.

The Feel: Usually a bit firmer, more bouncy, and less sticky than silicone.

2. Silicone

Silicone is derived from silica (sand!). It is known for being incredibly heat resistant and body-safe. High-grade silicone is used in medical devices and baby bottle nipples.

The Feel: This is the material that gives you that ultra-soft, "slow-rising," sometimes slightly sticky, mochi-like feel.

Quick Comparison: What’s the Difference?

Here is a simple breakdown to help you understand what you are holding:

Feature TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) Silicone
Softness Medium Softness, Bouncy Ultra Soft, "Slow Rise"
Stickiness Less Sticky Often Sticky (See how to clean it!)
Durability Very High (Tear resistant) High, but can tear if pinched hard
Common Use Stretchy noodles, firmer stress balls Mochi squishies, detailed soft toys

🛑 The Big Question: Are They Toxic?

The Messimaze Safety Promise

The short answer is: Quality matters.

Cheap, low-grade plastics can contain harmful phthalates or BPA. However, at Messimaze, safety is our priority. We ensure our TPR and Silicone toys are:

  • Non-Toxic
  • BPA-Free
  • Phthalate-Free

What about that "new toy smell"?

Just like a new car or a new pair of sneakers has a smell, newly manufactured soft materials can have a slight scent when first opened. This is normal "off-gassing" from the production process and usually dissipates quickly after airing out. It does not indicate toxic fumes if the materials are certified safe.

Which One Should You Choose?

It comes down to personal preference! If you want something durable to really stretch and pull, go for TPR. If you want that super-satisfying, soft, slow-squish feeling, Silicone is your best choice.

We use both materials to bring you the best variety of sensations!
